Notes from our little island family

A Little Time Away, a Lot to Be Thankful For… and Yes, the Biscuits Are Coming Back!

From family milestones and glowing waters to jumping orcas and answered prayers, the Driftwood crew has been making memories. But don't worry, Daufuskie. We're coming home!

A little family time, a lot of memories — and one very colorful stop along the way.
We're heading home Sunday · Back for breakfast Tuesday, October 13

If you've wandered by the Driftwood Diner lately and found the doors locked, we promise we haven't run off and joined the circus. Although, after this past week, we might actually be qualified.

We've traded biscuit dough for a few days of adventure, family, and some much-needed time together. And while we love serving breakfast to our little island community, sometimes life reminds us that the most important things aren't found on a menu.

Sometimes, you've just got to close the doors, hit the road, and enjoy the people God has blessed you with.

And boy, did we make the most of it!

From Little Girls to Young Ladies

Our adventure began last Friday when we packed up and headed toward Cocoa Beach, Florida, for a very special celebration.

One of Lynley's friends was celebrating her quinceañera, a beautiful tradition in many Hispanic families marking a young girl's 15th birthday and the beginning of a new chapter in her life.

First of all, what an incredible celebration! The traditions, the love, the family, and the significance behind it all were absolutely beautiful. We were honored that Lynley was invited to share in such a meaningful occasion.

But somewhere in the middle of all that celebrating, something hit us as parents.

These babies are growing up.

Wasn't it just yesterday they were little girls running around without a care in the world? Now we're watching them turn into young ladies, celebrating milestones, and beginning to find their own way.

Nobody really prepares you for how proud and a little heartbroken you can feel at the exact same time. So we soaked it all in, celebrated alongside some wonderful people, and quietly wished we could convince time to pump the brakes just a little.

A Little Florida Magic (And No, We're Not Talking About Disney)

Since we were already in Florida, we figured we'd turn the trip into a long weekend of family time. And let us tell you, it did not disappoint!

One of the absolute highlights was a nighttime bioluminescence kayaking tour.

Now, living on Daufuskie, we're certainly no strangers to the beauty of the water. We've seen some incredible sunsets, peaceful mornings, and more than our fair share of God's handiwork.

But paddling through water that literally glows in the darkness? That's something else entirely.

It was fascinating, beautiful, educational, and honestly one of the coolest experiences we've ever had together. We learned so much about the natural world around us, and it was another reminder that no matter how much of this beautiful creation we've seen, God still has plenty of ways to leave us speechless.

And believe us, getting this family speechless is no small accomplishment.

Sea Lions, Orcas, and a Whole Lot of Fun

Monday brought another adventure: SeaWorld Orlando!

We spent the day enjoying everything we could squeeze in, including the sea lion experience and the incredible orca presentation.

The sea lions were entertaining, but those orcas?

They absolutely stole the show.

The orcas were a hit. Just look at that jump!

Watching those enormous animals leap out of the water was something special. Their size, power, and grace were remarkable, and seeing the excitement through Lynley's eyes made the experience even better.

Let's just say the family gave SeaWorld two enthusiastic thumbs up.

Although after watching those orcas fly through the air, we're pretty sure our next trip out on the water around Daufuskie might involve a little more looking over our shoulders.

The Most Important Stop of All

As wonderful as the celebrations and adventures were, one of the most meaningful parts of this trip didn't involve an attraction, a ticket, or a special event. It involved family.

Tuesday brought us to the family check-in that mattered most: spending time with Julie's dad as we made our way toward Chattanooga.

Many of you know that this year has brought its share of challenges for our family. There have been some difficult moments, some long days, and plenty of prayers. And through it all, we've been reminded again and again of God's faithfulness.

Well, we're happy to report that Julie's dad is doing GREAT!

In fact, he's been doing so well that Julie decided she needed to lay her own two eyeballs on him just to make sure he wasn't exaggerating a little.

You know how dads can be.

"I'm doing just fine!"

Meanwhile, the daughters of the world are thinking, "Uh-huh. I'll be the judge of that."

Thankfully, this time he wasn't just telling us what we wanted to hear.

Seeing how far he's come brought a tremendous amount of peace and gratitude. After everything our family has walked through this year, moments like these mean more than we could ever put into words.

God is good. All the time.

And sometimes answered prayers don't come with fireworks or grand announcements. Sometimes they simply look like getting to sit with someone you love, seeing that they're doing well, and realizing just how much you have to be thankful for.

That alone was worth every mile of this trip.

Now, About Those Biscuits…

As much as we've enjoyed our time away, there's something pretty special about knowing we're headed back home to Daufuskie.

We'll be making our way home Sunday, and Driftwood Diner will officially reopen Tuesday, October 13th!

And honestly, we couldn't be more excited.

October is one of our absolute favorite times of the year on Daufuskie Island. The weather starts showing off, the humidity finally considers minding its own business, and the island settles into that beautiful fall rhythm.

It's the perfect time to slow down, explore a little, enjoy some good company, and, naturally, find yourself a proper breakfast.

We're looking forward to welcoming back our island regulars, meeting new visitors, hearing everybody's stories, and getting back to what makes the Diner so special.

For Julie, that means getting back into her happy place: the kitchen, cooking for friends and strangers who usually don't stay strangers very long.

For all of us, it means returning to the little place where good food, conversation, community, and faith have a way of coming together.

And yes, before somebody asks, the biscuits will be back too.

We certainly hope you've managed to survive without them. We hear there are other breakfast options floating around the island these days.

Bless their hearts. 😉

A Little Gratitude Before We Get Back to Work

This little getaway wasn't just a vacation.

It was a reminder to celebrate milestones, embrace adventure, treasure our families, and recognize the blessings that sometimes get lost in the busyness of everyday life.

2026 has been quite a year for our family. Some moments we'd gladly relive, and others we wouldn't wish to repeat. But through every high and low, God has continued to provide exactly what we needed, even when we didn't know what that was.

And that's something worth being thankful for.

To our wonderful Daufuskie community, thank you for allowing our family the space to step away for a bit. Thank you for your prayers, your encouragement, and for continuing to make our little Diner feel like so much more than a restaurant.

We're grateful and ready to get back to serving the best breakfast we know how.

So mark your calendars, folks! Tuesday, October 13th, we're firing the griddle back up!

Come hungry. Stay awhile. Tell us what we've missed.

And remember, life's too short for bad biscuits and missed opportunities to make memories.

See y'all Tuesday!
